SUN + MOON

KING STREET PARKLET

Sun + Moon

Winning entry in the 2020 King Street Temporary Parklet Design Build Competition, Toronto

Sun + Moon is a winning entry of the 2020 King Street Parklet Design-Build Competition done in partnership with ANEX Works (fabricators).

Excerpt from Competition Brief:

Temporary parklets are creative structures that encourage people to gather, sit, and enjoy their surroundings. They are an economical and innovative solution to provide more space for people in areas that have limited sidewalk space.

Artistic Statement:

SUN + MOON is meant to evoke a sense of child-like wonder on King Street. The placement of these simple iconic forms in the midst of a dense urban context is meant to get people to stop, slow down, smile and play.

The Sun and the Moon are traditional forms that are introduced to us in early childhood and continue to inspire us throughout our lives. From children’s books, early cinema, music, astronomy, all the way to the newly re-ignited race to the moon, the relationship between the Sun and the Moon will always have an important place in the human psyche.

When you enter the space of the SUN + MOON parklet, imagine yourself leaving earth and embarking on a journey, just like you once did as a child. What do you see around you? How does this change your context? Can you still dream as you once did?
