MISKO-AKI: CONFLUENCE OF CULTURES

PERMANENT EXHIBIT

Muskoka Discovery Centre
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

3000 sq.ft.

Awarded the Canadian Museums Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Exhibitions

This permanent exhibition honours the thousands-of-years old presence of Indigenous peoples on the lands of Misko-Aki, the red earth, of Muskoka. Following a floor-marked river visitors are taken on a journey down the length of the gallery, encountering both historic and contemporary stories. Double-sided printed scrims create notional yet discrete spaces which, by means of large format commissioned photography, help to place visitors into the landscape. Many craft pieces were similarly commissioned from regional artists, helping in a small way to keep alive traditional skills and practices.
