PERMANENT EXHIBIT
Kahnekano·lú Cultural Center
Oneida, WI
In 2018, the Oneida Nation purchased an 11-acre property that includes a 19,400 sq. ft. former church building to serve as the Cultural Center’s new home. The expanded facility now houses the Nation’s growing collection, accommodates larger permanent and temporary/traveling exhibitions, provides additional space for public and educational programs, and brings staff together under one roof.
In 2023, WeatherstonBruer Associates joined a team with Lord Cultural Resources and Bluewater Studio to envision the visitor experience for the permanent exhibition at the relocated Museum. The exhibits are organized around a central display area featuring the foundational principles of Oneida culture: the Thanksgiving Address and the Creation Story. The space is anchored by Sky Woman, an impressive limestone sculpture by Oneida artist Scott Hill (Wakatatlihuni) and large-scale murals by graphic artist David Beyer.
Branching out radially from Sky Woman are galleries focusing on Oneida culture, values, language and sovereignty. Working closely with the Museum team, WBa designed a highly-varied and engaging visitor experience that includes hands-on interactives, immersive environments, artistic multimedia exhibits and flexible collection displays that highlight artifacts alongside contemporary works of art and craft by living artists.
Some exhibit highlights include the Wampum Wall: an interactive display in the Sovereignty gallery that integrates community member portraits with the Oneida Nation Wampum belt. Developed in close collaboration with the community, the exhibit creates a space where community members can see themselves reflected in the museum.
The Three Sisters Planting Interactive: a hands-on learning experience that invites multi-generational participation and uses play to reinforce the symbiotic relationship of the Three Sisters.
Timeline Rings: this unique approach replaces the traditional linear timeline with five thematic rings. The circular design invites visitors to gather around and connect with Oneida history through a communal experience.
